Ministry Teams: Salt & Light Drama Team

Drama Team

The Salt & Light Drama Team ministers through a full-length original drama, with a different play presented each year. Team members prepare during the first semester and minister during the second semester (mid January through April) to churches and Christian schools usually within a 1–2-hour travel time from the college.

Salt & Light’s ministry is geared for teens and adults but usually is suitable for most audiences of all ages. Because there is no drama without conflict, there always are some moments of tension between people, which may include raised voices and mild physical violence (as in shoving or grabbing another person). Some younger children may find these moments upsetting, and we leave it to the discretion of parents as to their seeing the drama.

We have a limited number of dates for the Salt & Light Drama Team to be scheduled, as all of the team members are full-time students at the college. Contact Tim Gonzales, Ministry Team Itinerary Coordinator, to schedule Salt & Light.

2013 Ministry Program

Powerless

This year’s drama is, “Powerless.” Set during the powerful derecho storm that hit the Appalachians and surrounding area in the summer of 2012, this year’s drama, “Powerless,” deals with an extended family and their struggle to experience God’s power in their daily lives. Mandy and Luke, a young married couple, care for Mandy’s 17-year-old sister, Charlotte, and for Mandy’ Grandmother, despite the tragedy that nearly destroyed the couple a year before. Sweet and loving Charlotte has William’s Syndrome and is mentally challenged. She has a tendency to wander off, bringing threats from the Department of Health and Human Resources to remove her from the home. Godly Grandma Gill, who prays for her grandchildren and tries to be a positive influence, has a medical issues that require her to have daily oxygen therapy. Jed, Mandy and Charlotte’s estranged brother, wants to make amends for the tragedy he had a hand in the previous year, but Mandy wants nothing to do with him. The storm hits, leaving the area without electrical power, which brings to a head the lack of spiritual power in Mandy and Luke’s lives. The content is suitable for older adolescents, teens and adults, but may not be suitable for younger children because of storm sounds and family arguments. The drama is approximately 50-60 minutes in length.
